Medicare Advantage Members Will See Costs Savings as Presbyterian Accesses Specialty Drugs at a Lower Costs

March 2, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Presbyterian Health Plan is pleased to announce some changes to its 2012 Medicare Advantage benefit plans, which will lower out-of-pocket costs for patients, by accessing specific specialty medications at a lower cost.

As a not-for-profit health care organization, Presbyterian Healthcare Services is able to access these specialty drugs for its patients through the government and other programs at lower costs, passing the savings along to Medicare Advantage members.

“When patients are facing serious illness, the last thing they and their families need to worry about is the cost of specialty medications,” said Dennis Batey, MD, president of Presbyterian Health Plan. “At Presbyterian, we are very committed to finding new ways to change how health care is delivered and paid for so it can become more affordable for those we serve, which is why we are making this change.”

Medicare Advantage members who are receiving these medications will see savings of approximately $470 per year in out-of-pocket expenses. The overall savings of approximately $2 million will be reinvested in lower premiums and enhanced benefits for all Medicare Advantage members.

“We want to ensure that there will not be any disruption of care to patients,” said Dr. Batey. “Members who currently receive these specialty medications at their physician’s office can continue to do so as the medication will be delivered by Presbyterian directly to the physician from our specialty pharmacy. The only difference to the patient will be that the medication will cost less.”

“As health care costs continue rise, Presbyterian is committed to ensuring more affordable health care for our patients and members,” said Dr. Batey.
